I travel there frequently on business-I was there just last Tuesday. It’s part of Maui County, and is the sixth largest of the Hawaiian islands in terms of area and population. The island has one town: Lanai City, and one K-12 school. The school’s teams are called the Pinelads and Pinelasses.
For decades it was a pineapple plantation. The economy has shifted to tourism in recent years. Snorkeling, hunting, sailing, and fishing are popular activities. It is essentially a company town, owned by Castle & Cooke.
You usually only get to live there if you work there. For that reason, it typically has the lowest unemployment rate in the state, but 25 workers were laid off recently.
Most of the population, maybe 60%, is Filipino. Some are recent immigrants from the Philippines, others are descended from immigrants who came to Hawaii to work the sugar and pineapple plantations. Filipinos have been in Hawaii for just over 100 years. One of the Filipino couples on Lanai is celebrating their 79th wedding anniversary this month!
Famous people with a Lanai connection include Bette Midler, who used to work in the pineapple cannery before moving to New York and becoming an entertainer. Bill and Melinda Gates–of Microsoft fame–wanted a private wedding, so they rented every room in both hotels on Lanai and bought every plane ticket!
