They offered me the opportunity to study for a semester at the University of Hawaii. However, I heard a lot of bad things are over dorms. Really so bad? I’ve heard stories ranging from cockroaches, mold, and problems with sewage. And the dorms are very outdated. Thanks for your help.

My dorm experience at UH was in the EWC, which is mostly different from the undergrad dorms because of the human creatures. I remember someone who lived in the undergrad dorms talking about a guy that would come to the dorm and call up for his girlfriend. My friend was from Minnesota, and said the guy sounded just like a moose in rut.

OK, yeah, I had stalactites on my ceiling, but the maintenance people broke those off and fixed the drainage and leakage issues. I hear they also fixed the problem in the shower that caused the walls to ooze something orange. And sightings of big, poisonous centipedes were actually kind of rare. Although, come to think of it, I did have a friend that was studying Entomology, and she found most of the samples for her collection in the dormitory, with the help of her friends. We continued to call her whenever we found an interesting bug in the dorm, long after she quit taking the class. Ah…good times! In spite of it all, that really was one of my favorite places to live.

Anyway, all of that was ten years ago, and I hear they have renovated some of the dorms, so some of those problems have probably gone away by now.

The dorms you have to be concerned about are the Towers (Hale Aloha complex). These are the ones that have the problems. When I went to sleepover at a friends dorm over Spring Break one year, I didn’t like it.

Gateway House, however, is good. There was no need to share a bathroom with twelve or so other people, and I have yet to hear problems coming from there.

The newest dorm is Frear Hall, which is eco-friendly and has AC.

UH is slowly updating their dorms after many complaints. I wouldn’t say it’s the worst campus to dorm on, as there are no other options for international and out-of-state students.
